What exactly is a dental crown?
Dental Crowns Calgary NE
Crowns are used to restore both anterior and posterior teeth that have been broken or are at high risk of doing so due to large old fillings or fractures. Dental crowns, also called caps are indicated if a significant portion of the tooth is missing. Usually, extensive decay, injury or root canal therapy, are the reasons when a crown is recommended.
During your first visit, we will prepare your tooth structure and then take an impression of the prepared tooth. The next step is to make a temporary crown to place on the tooth, and send the impression to a dental laboratory to fabricate the crown.
At your next visit, we will try-in the crown to ensure a good fit and then cement the crown in place. When a tooth is compromised by decay or damage, we may suggest a crown, inlay, or onlay. These restorations, made in a lab from fine dental porcelain, will blend seamlessly with your teeth, return the strength that you need for comfortable oral function, and maintain your all-white smile. Our crowns will look and feel close to your real teeth!

What exactly is a dental bridge?
Dental Bridges Calgary NE
Dental bridges are fixed, or non-removable prosthesis constructed to replace one or more missing teeth. The teeth on both sides of the existing space are used to attach the bridge to restore functionality and esthetics. Materials used for this process are noble alloys, porcelain or porcelain fused to metal.
Bridges are recommended whenever at least one tooth is missing. A bridge is composed of abutments and pontics. Abutments are the supports for the bridge and consist of crowns placed on the teeth surrounding the empty space. The pontics are special crowns that span across the empty space and connect to the abutments. When teeth are prepared for a bridge, the abutments are prepared for crowns just as described in crowns. We will then take an impression of the prepared teeth, make a temporary bridge to place on the teeth to protect them and maintain their positions, and send the impression to a dental laboratory to fabricate the bridge. At your next visit, we will try-in the bridge to ensure a good fit and then cement the bridge in place. As with dental crowns, we will make your dental bridge look and feel ‘real’.
What materials are dental crowns or bridges made of?
Dental crowns or bridges are usually either made of noble alloys, or porcelain. There are many different types of porcelain crowns. Our dental team will determine which type is best suited for your particular need. As far as we know, porcelain is the most popular material for dental crowns and bridges because it looks and feels like natural teeth. This seems to be one of the most important factors for many people: Teeth that look and feel ‘Real’. We strive to make your new smile as real as possible! Need a crown or bridge right now? Consider dental crowns or bridges Calgary NE from Cornerstone Family Dental.
Why can’t I just have a filling instead of a dental crown?
Fillings are great for small cavities, but if left untreated, some cavities can hollow out your tooth. If your tooth is not stable at the root, and the “shell” is unable to withstand normal use, then you will need a crown and filling. Simply put: A crown is needed if the cavity or damage is too large for a filling.
Will a dental crown or bridge match my original teeth?
Our team will always focus on making your crown / bridge look natural and real, fitting the rest of your teeth. We promise that when you look into the mirror to see the result, you won’t be disappointed!
How long will it take to get a dental crown or bridge?
If your tooth is a candidate for the Cerec One appointment crown , it will only take 1 appointment and will be made in office. Dental crown or bridge treatment will usually involve two separate appointments. During the first, we will assess your tooth/teeth, take measurements and impressions. In addition, we will prepare and shape your tooth/teeth for the new addition(s).
Usually, we will install a temporary crown until your permanent one has been finalized by our dental lab. Our treatment coordinator will schedule a final appointment before you leave our office. We are aware that at some dental clinics it is possible to get a crown in one day.
However, at Cornerstone Family Dental, we prefer the high quality and durability of the crowns created as a two-step process. Bottom line: We try to make our procedures as easy and fast as possible for you. Are you living in the Calgary NE area and need a dental crown or bridge? Make an appointment today!
